Crispy Tofu Nuggets (Both Skillet Fry & Air Fry Methods)

Appetizing and crispy! Tofu nuggets are not only fun to prepare, but also fun to eat. Enjoy as a snack, as a meal or while on the go! Cook with Plantopia plant-based foods.

Crispy Tofu Nuggets
(Both Skillet Fry & Air Fry Methods)

12 ounces extra-firm tofu, pressed, cut into 1-inch cubes
4 tablespoons all-purpose unbleached flour
4 tablespoons cold water
1 tablespoon Plantopia Plant-Based Foods Lemon Pepper Hummus
1 tablespoon of tapioca starch
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast
Dash of white pepper
2 cups of seasoned bread crumbs
Non-stick cooking spray

Press tofu and set aside.

Prepare nugget batter.

In a large bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of flour, lemon pepper hummus, and water— combine until smooth.

Prepare In a separate bowl combine, tapioca starch, salt, nutritional yeast, remaining 3 tablespoons of flour, and white pepper. Pour all the combined ingredients into a large plastic bag or you can leave in the bowl.

Dredge Tofu

Dip your pressed tofu into the nugget batter; let excess batter drip.
Toss glazed tofu nuggets into the flour bag and shake—coat the tofu with flour. Once you achieve a good coat, place the tofu into a colander, shake, eliminating excess flour.

Repeat the dredging method x 2

Toss tofu in with bread crumbs, until evenly covered.

In a skillet, heat oil (1/2 inch) over medium-high heat. Place tofu nuggets apart in oil and cook for about 3-5 minutes (for crispy nuggets), turning once or until golden brown.

Your nuggets should be nice and crispy; remove the nuggets from the skillet and place them on a dry kitchen towel or paper towels. Pat any excess oil off the nuggets.

Repeat the dredging process with any remaining nuggets.

Air Fry Nuggets

Spray air fryer basket with cooking spray and preheat to 400°F.

Arrange half of the tofu pieces in the basket, without overlapping. Spray the tops of nuggets with cooking spray.

Cook for 15 minutes. Shake and spray nuggets while cooking, if need be to prevent any sticking. Remove tofu nuggets from the air fryer to a cooling rack or plate. Repeat with remaining tofu nuggets until all are cooked.

Serve immediately with Agave Mustard dipping sauce or Jessica’s Homemade BBQ Sauce.
