As I watched my daughter slurping Big Mike’s Shaved Ice on a spoon, my own, summer childhood memories came to mind —rushing to the pool, playing neighborhood games, but the sweetest of them all, melted popsicles and ice cream sandwiches. Fast forward to today, shaved ice and snow cones have become my daughter’s summertime “thang”—a memory that she too, will one day share with her children.
I know, I know some may ask, is it healthy? I’m not sure, but I did ask. For the most part, shaved ice flavors are concentrated, natural flavors, but to keep it real, sitting down with my daughter and watching her pout about with her popsicle-stained lips was priceless. As a mother, who is raising a vegan child, I never want to deprive her of individual food experiences.
What Is Shaved Ice?
Shaved ice or Hawaiian shaved ice has become very popular; it’s the new summertime treat. The ice is made from a block of ice, shaved ice is fluffy with a snow-like texture. Once the ice is shaved, an ample amount of flavored syrup is poured over the ice, just like traditional snow cones. The ice absorbs the flavoring and served in a cup.
Big Mike’s Shaved Ice Owned by, local Michael Buchanan, Big Mike’s Shaved Ice offers a variety of unique and familiar flavors, such as strawberry, mango, pineapple, watermelon, strawberry, and Bahama Mama, I mean the list goes on. The prices are set at a reasonable price, not your typical overpriced carnival cost; a small cup cost $2, a medium-size cup cost $3, and a large cup cost $6. The cups are pretty big too! Plus, you can choose up to three flavors. Now, that’s what I’m talking about!
If you are driving, and not paying attention, you can easily pass up Big Mike’s stand. So, next time while cruising on Bardstown Road, be on the lookout for a Big Mike’s little yellow shack located directly across from the Mid-City Mall—it sets on the lawn of William Deans Salon.
Chilling on the block of Bardstown while recapturing, innocent childhood memories, was a “cool” experience. I highly recommend this fun experience, tell them JT sent you!
